{"id":1012,"date":"2024-05-08T17:37:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T17:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/matsyendranatha.com\/?p=1012"},"modified":"2024-05-08T17:41:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T17:41:54","slug":"interesting-etymology-of-the-term-kar%e1%b9%87a-according-to-yaska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matsyendranatha.com\/?p=1012","title":{"rendered":"Interesting etymology of the term &#8220;kar\u1e47a&#8221; according to Y\u0101ska"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Looking through <em>Y\u0101ska\u2019s<\/em> work, I found another interesting point related to the interpretation of the word \u201c<em>kar\u1e47a<\/em>\u201d (\u0915\u0930\u094d\u0923 \u2013 an ear), which, in my opinion, very clearly indicates the rite of \u201c<em>ka<em>\u1e47<\/em>-chira<\/em>\u201d \u2013 one of the the <em>N\u0101tha<\/em> <em>sa\u1e43sk\u0101ras<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0915\u0930\u094d\u0923\u0903 \u0915\u0943\u0928\u094d\u0924\u0924\u0947\u0903\u0964 \u0928\u093f\u0915\u0943\u0924\u094d\u0924\u0926\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0930\u094b \u092d\u0935\u0924\u093f \u0964<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kar\u1e47a (an ear) comes from the root \u0915\u0943\u0924\u094d \u201ckrit\u201d (to cut through), this is cutting a hole.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rite of <em>kar\u1e47a-vedhana<\/em> (piercing the earlobes) is included in the <em>Vedic<\/em> <em>sa\u1e43sk\u0101ras<\/em>, along with receiving the sacred thread, etc., so it is not surprising that there is such a definition here. However, <em>Y\u0101ska<\/em> further gives another version:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u090b\u091a\u094d\u091b\u0924\u0947\u0930\u093f\u0924\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0917\u094d\u0930\u093e\u092f\u0923\u0903 \u0964<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Ricchha\u201d means \u201cto move,\u201d says \u0100gr\u0101ya\u1e47a (\u0101c\u0101rya).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u090b\u091a\u094d\u091b\u0928\u094d\u0924\u0940\u0935 \u0916\u0947 \u0909\u0926\u0917\u0928\u094d\u0924\u093e\u092e\u094d \u0964<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Just as if there was movement in space (sound or nada).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <em>\u015b\u0101bar-mantra<\/em> of the <em>N\u0101thas<\/em>, for the \u201c<em>ku\u1e47\u1e0dala<\/em>\u201d (earrings) that are worn during such a ritual, it refers to the sound vibration \u201c<em>nada<\/em>\u201d and its connection with <em>khecar\u012b<\/em>&#8211;<em>mudr\u0101<\/em>, but in the context of the fact that the sound \u201cmoves\u201d in <em>\u0101k\u0101\u015ba<\/em> (space). At the end it is said that above the ears of <em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101th<\/em> is <em>\u0101k\u0101\u015ba<\/em>, and below them is the earth, i.e. he is an image of the confluence of these polarities. He combines (<em>mudr\u0101<\/em>) <em>khecar\u012b<\/em> and <em>bh\u016bcar\u012b<\/em> (<em>\u015aakti<\/em> in the manifest world and in emptiness).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would also like to note that the Sun and Moon are luminaries that constantly move in space, just like the Earth itself with the Moon, rotating around it and reflecting the light of the Sun. All these movements are time (<em>kal\u0101<\/em>), which is sometimes translated as \u201cdeath\u201d in Sanskrit. Therefore, one who has gone beyond polarity and time comprehends the reality of immortality beyond the manifest and the unmanifest.
