The vowels are considered to be \u2018masculine\u2019; the consonants are deemed to be \u2018feminine\u2019. The first vowel, <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">,<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">starts at the back of the throat, and moves to the lips, as a sign of increasing manifestation<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> The first consonant, <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">K<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, also starts at the back of the throat, and moves to the lips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The fifteenth \u2018vowel\u2019 is the phoneme <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u1e42,<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> which is called \u2018drop\u2019 or \u2018point\u2019 (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">bindu) <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">or \u2018subsidiary vowel\u2019 (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">anusvara<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">). It is like the crest of the wave when it is about to crash. It seems to hover; all the power of the crash is there, but nothing has yet happened. The sixteenth \u2018vowel\u2019 is <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u1e24,<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> which is called \u2018emission\u2019 (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">visarga<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">). It is like that split-second when the wave begins to crash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This symbolism is continued in the orthography. The <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">bindu<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> is written as a single dot with the letter <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u1e40<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: all is contained in the point. The <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">visarga<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> is written with two dots, : , signifying the differentiation that occurs on emission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The phoneme <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">K, <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">pronounced at the back of the throat, symbolizes the very first moment of manifestation, like the breaking of the wave. The following phonemes are understood to represent the manifesting of the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u015bloka<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> 90 relies on this symbolism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Practice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>A<\/em> is pronounced briefly, such that there is no mental activity of any sort associated with it. Indeed, the brevity of the recitation involves the cessation of breath (<em>kumbhaka<\/em>). The practitioner is to recite the phoneme <em>A<\/em> without <em>bindu<\/em> or <em>visarga,<\/em> which are very often the concluding phonemes of a mantra, and therefore without any hint of manifestation, and so in the state of pure subjectivity and supremacy. As a result this is the simplest of mantras. Indeed, it is the first step in pronouncing the mantra <em>AUM,<\/em> the <em>pr\u0101\u1e47ava<\/em>, which is considered to be the primordial sound.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The phoneme <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A,<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> the vowel at the very start of the fifty phonemes, symbolizes \u015aiva himself, who is at the origin of all. It is his phonic form. (The second phoneme, <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u0100<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, symbolizes his consort, \u015aakti.) To recite the phoneme in all its simplicity is to come to unity and simplicity, and to the very basis of all mantras and words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The practitioners by reciting the phonic form of \u015aiva will, by his grace, come to identity with him. They will in fact be \u015aiva reciting \u015aiva, \u015aiva expressing himself in what symbolizes him perfectly. There is identity between the sayer (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">vacaka<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">) and the saying (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">vacya<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Yet, nothing is automatic. Even a parrot can be taught to recite <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. What counts is the level of grace, the knowledge and will and the purity of motivation, as well as the correctness of the pronunciation. The saying will be total if the identification with \u015aiva is total, but time and practice may be required before identity of sayer and saying is attained. If the practitioners were able to recite the phoneme <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">in all fullness, they would need to say it only once. There would be no need to repeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The sound <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> is also emitted at moments of wonder (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">camatkara<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">), pleasure, beauty and surprise, and also before what is horrible. In these moments of amazement the person goes beyond the limitations of mind and arrives at transcendence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The moment of transcendent amazement cannot be contained, and defies all attempts at definition. Thus <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> contains all knowledge. It is the \u2018flood of knowledge\u2019 (<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">j\u00f1\u0101naugha\u1e25<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Sanskrit word <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">sahas\u0101<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> means \u2018powerfully, \u2018mightily\u2019. It is intentionally chosen. The acts of inhalation and exhalation are symbolized by <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">SA<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">HA<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, which are the \u2018sun\u2019 and \u2018moon\u2019 breaths, and are found in well-known mantras such as <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">ha\u1e43sa<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> or <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">so \u2018ham<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. But because the breaths alternate, each is limited compared with the utter simplicity of just <\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
