{"id":280,"date":"2017-04-15T17:10:41","date_gmt":"2017-04-15T17:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/matsyendranatha.com\/?p=280"},"modified":"2017-04-15T17:12:19","modified_gmt":"2017-04-15T17:12:19","slug":"mudras-from-natha-texts-and-tantric-mudras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matsyendranatha.com\/?p=280","title":{"rendered":"Mudr\u0101s from N\u0101tha texts and T\u0101ntric mudr\u0101s"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div>Such <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em>\u00a0as <em>kara\u1e45ki\u1e47i<\/em>, <em>krodhin\u012b<\/em>, <em>bhairav\u012b<\/em>, <em>lelih\u0101n\u0101<\/em> and <em>khecar\u012b<\/em> belong to the same system. The basis of this system is <em>khecar\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>, and the other four are in fact various aspects of <em>khecar\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>. These <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em> are mentioned in 32nd <em>\u0101hnika<\/em> (5-6) of &#8216;Tantr\u0101loka&#8217; as a manifestation of <em>khecar\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>, and altogether they described as a principle (\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0924\u093f\u092c\u093f\u092e\u094d\u092c\u094b\u0926\u092f\u094b <em>pratibimbodayo<\/em>), reflection of divine awareness between a subject and an object(s). The practice of these five <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em> is mentioned in a famous &#8216;Vij\u00f1\u0101na Bhairava Tantra&#8217; (<em>dh\u0101ra\u1e47\u0101<\/em> 54) and in a number of other texts, such as, for instance, &#8216;Mah\u0101rtha Manjar\u012b.&#8217; <em>N\u0101thas<\/em>\u00a0attribute &#8216;Mah\u0101rtha Manjar\u012b&#8217; to <em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101th<\/em>, as the text identifies Maheshvarananda and Gorak\u1e63an\u0101th\u00a0as authors. Also, these five <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em> are connected with <em>Ku\u1e47\u1e0dalin\u012b\u00a0\u015aakti<\/em>, through its awakening by ritual sexual practices, ascending over five centres in the microcosm of a practitioner, starting from \u2018<em>kanda<\/em>\u2019 in a lower part of a body to <em>b<span style=\"color: #000000;\">hr\u016bmadhya<\/span><\/em>. While <em>Ku\u1e47\u1e0dalin\u012b<\/em>\u00a0ascends, these <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em> proceed as follows: <em>kara\u1e45ki\u1e47i, krodhin\u012b, bhairav\u012b, lelih\u0101n\u0101<\/em> and in <em>bhr\u016bmadhya<\/em> &#8211; <em>khecar\u012b<\/em>. That practice may include both inner and objective awareness. Also, many texts state that these <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em>\u00a0reveal different perfections. <em>Kara\u1e45ki\u1e47i<\/em>\u00a0is translated as \u2018a carcass\u2019. This <em>mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0gives an experience of &#8216;<em>j\u00f1\u0101na-siddhi&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; the knowledge of conventionality of external form, because there is a divine dimension behind it. \u2018<em>Krodhin\u012b<\/em>\u2019 means destructive qualities of <em>Bhairava<\/em> or <em>Bhairav\u012b<\/em>, when <em>tattva<\/em> of a Deity, presented as devouring fire of a <em>mantra<\/em>, consumes basic elements of creation. <em>Bhairav\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0shows the unity of internal and external spaces, feeling of their interflow, which is an analog to <em>\u015b\u0101mbhav\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0in <em>Tantra<\/em>, described in many <em>T\u0101ntric<\/em> sources and in \u2018Amanaska Yoga\u2019 of <em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101th<\/em>\u00a0as \u201can unblinking outward gaze\u201d (with simultaneous inner awareness). <em>Bhairav\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0grants <em>mel\u0101pa-siddhi<\/em>, which is a realisation of unity between consciousness and outer space, or between <em>Bhairava<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Yogin\u012b<\/em>. <em>Lelih\u0101n\u0101-mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0means the consumption of ne\u0441tar \u2018<em>kul\u0101m\u1e5bita<\/em>\u2019. This <em>mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0gives <em>\u015bakta-siddhi<\/em>, practically it\u2019s an enhanced form of <em>bhairav\u012b-mudra<\/em>. <em>Khecar\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0grants a state of immersion into the omnipresent space of appeasement, which reveals\u00a0<em>\u015b<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0101mbhava<\/span>-siddhi<\/em>. Five chakras in microcosmic system of human being can be found in many early <em>T\u0101ntric<\/em> traditions and their texts: in the 29th Chapter of &#8216;Tantr\u0101loka&#8217;, where they are mentioned in connection with eight <em>vyomas<\/em>; in Kubjik\u0101\u00a0Tantras, also in texts of <em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101th<\/em>\u00a0(e.g. \u2018Gorak\u1e63a-pur\u0101\u1e47a\u2019). Many similarities about such sort of practices can be found in texts of <em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101th<\/em>\u00a0and many other <em>N\u0101tha\u00a0Yogins<\/em>, as in the title of <em>T\u0101ntric<\/em> <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em>, as well as in their essential reference points. The fact that yoga texts say that of all <em>yogic<\/em> <em>mudr\u0101s khecar\u012b-mudr\u0101<\/em>\u00a0is the fundamental (essential) is not accidental. <em>Guruji<\/em> <em>Mithile\u015b N\u0101th\u00a0ji<\/em> told me once that Tantra is a nutrition environment for <em>N\u0101tha\u00a0Yogins<\/em>, it served as \u2018nourishment\u2019 for yogic life of <em>N\u0101thas<\/em>. But of course, there is a vast amount of detailing in Tantrism, sacred use of Sanskrit\u00a0alphabet, it\u2019s phonetics, including mentioned <em>mudr\u0101s<\/em> and other methods.
