It could literally be translated as:\u00a0<em>rak\u1e63a<\/em> (a protector) and <em>go<\/em> (of cows). But, if you meet some Indians, who have heard about\u00a0<em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101tha<\/em> and associated him with <em>yoga<\/em>, most likely they will explain <em>go<\/em> as senses. Thus, many translate it as \u201cone, who protects the senses or controls the senses,\u201d which is often interpreted as the practice of <em>praty\u0101h\u0101ra<\/em>, etc. Of course, the control of <em>indriyas<\/em>, redirection of <em>pr\u0101\u1e47a<\/em>\u00a0and perception of\u00a0<em>\u0101tman<\/em> within oneself are very important in <em>yoga<\/em>. However, while reading <em>Y\u0101ska&#8217;s<\/em> <em>Nirukta<\/em> and\u00a0<em>\u015ar\u012b<\/em> <em>Aurobindo&#8217;s<\/em> most interesting works, the <em>Secret of the Veda<\/em>, I found an even deeper meaning of the term <em>go<\/em>.\u00a0<em>\u015ar\u012b<\/em> <em>Aurobindo<\/em> gives many references to the <em>Rig Veda<\/em>, where the term <em>go<\/em> (like the sun rays) refers to the Absolute as a whole. <em>Y\u0101ska<\/em> says in\u00a0<em>Nirukta<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u0906\u0926\u093f\u0924\u094d\u092f\u094b\u093d\u092a\u093f \u0917\u094c\u0930\u0941\u091a\u094d\u092f\u0924\u0947<span class=\"s1\"> |<br \/>\n<\/span><em>\u0101dityo&#8217;pi gaurucyate |<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>The sun is also called &#8216;go&#8217;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In further explanation, there is a quotation of the hymn from the <em>Yajur Veda<\/em> (<em>adhy\u0101ya<\/em>\u00a018 \/ 40) containing <em>su\u1e63um\u1e47a<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u0938\u0941\u0937\u0941\u092e\u094d\u0923\u0903 \u0938\u0942\u0930\u094d\u092f\u0930\u0936\u094d\u092e\u093f\u0936\u094d\u091a\u0928\u094d\u0926\u094d\u0930\u092e\u093e \u0917\u0928\u094d\u0927\u0930\u094d\u0935\u0938\u094d\u0924\u0938\u094d\u092f \u0928\u0915\u094d\u0937\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0923\u094d\u092f\u092a\u094d\u0938\u0930\u0938\u094b \u092d\u0947\u0915\u0941\u0930\u092f\u094b<span class=\"s1\"> |<br \/>\n<\/span><em>su\u1e63um\u1e47a\u1e25 s\u016bryara\u015bmi\u015bcandram\u0101 gandharvastasya nak\u1e63atr\u0101\u1e47yapsaraso bhekurayo |<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Su\u1e63um\u1e47a, whose moonbeams are like the sun, is gandharva playing with nak\u1e63atras, who are \u0101psaras.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the other\u00a0<em>\u015blokas<\/em> of this hymn, <em>gandharva<\/em> is the wind and his\u00a0<em>\u0101psaras<\/em> are the waters, etc. Different elements are divided into male and female poles through the images of the <em>ganharva<\/em> and\u00a0<em>\u0101psaras<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Interestingly,<em>Y\u0101ska<\/em>\u00a0connects the rays of <em>su\u1e63um\u1e47a<\/em> with <em>go<\/em>, this is also found in other parts of his <em>Nirukta<\/em>. <em>Aurobindo<\/em> in his <em>Secret of the Veda<\/em>, has many references to the <em>Rig Veda<\/em> as well, where cows can be understood to mean the light of the sun,\u00a0<em>\u0101tman<\/em> and Absolute in general. Indeed, if you look in the dictionaries, then <em>go<\/em> can mean both the sun and the moon, and light as such. Accordingly,\u00a0<em>Gorak\u1e63an\u0101tha<\/em> can be perceived as one, who unites (<em>yoga<\/em>) the power of <em>ha<\/em> (sun) and <em>\u1e6dha<\/em> (moon) within <em>su\u1e63um\u1e47a<\/em>.
